It is set in what is often described as Helston's 'jewel in the crown' and now one of the town's most popular cafes is to be polished up with a major refit.

The new year will mark a new look for the Lakeside Cafe, based at Coronation Park.

It was taken over in January this year by Lucy and David Page, who already own Nauti But Ice and Go Nauti Pizza in Porthleven and the Stables Cafe at Penrose.

David told the Packet: "We took over in January and it was always the plan we would just run it for the year, to learn its strengths and weaknesses, and then do something in January and February."

Over the last few months they have been working with Porthleven design studio Boex to create a new look internally for the cafe, with the designs revealed to the public over the weekend.

They feature a wider range of seating options, from eating tables through to coffee tables with stools and a settee area.

To make it a reality, the cafe will close on January 2 for three weeks, with the plan to reopen on Friday, January 24 with a brand new look.

"In those three weeks, that will be when we refit it. We have already started with the menu, to make improvements and drive the quality of food down there using local suppliers like Dales Butchers, Origin Coffee, Rodda's and Westcountry," added David.

The revamp will not be the only changes taking place at the lake next year, however.

Their cafe lease also comes with the licence to operate the boats on the lake. Next week the couple will be travelling up country to look into replacing the pedalos with versions that tie in with the lake's focus on wildlife.

"We have been quite surprised at how the pedalos have been really, really successful and have really captured people's imaginations.

"We inherited the fleet from the previous operator last year and they're quite well used, so we'll looking to replace all that.

"Next week we'll be travelling to look at swan pedalos which we hope to introduce next Easter. I think they will be really bright, modern and graceful as they move around the boating lake," added David.

The Packet can also also reveal for the first time the cafe's new logo, which has been created by John Lowden, who they worked with in their Porthleven businesses, along with Boex.

It features a coffee cup and duck design, picking out two of the cafe's biggest selling points.

David said: ""Growing up in Helston, I am really excited to be delivering this new cafe in Coronation Park, which is unquestionably Helston's jewel in the crown."
