Cornwall's bikers are gearing up ahead of the biggest rideout of the year, taking place this weekend.

The 32nd Martin Jennings Run will be held on Sunday, weather permitting.

It commemorates the life of the Beacon man who died in the 1987 Manx Grand Prix on the Isle of Man as well as all other Cornish riders who have lost their lives.

More than 1,500 bikers are expected to take part in the event which culminates in a ride through Falmouth ending at the rugby club.

Last year's event was truly a sight to behold as the phalanx of bikes of every conceivable shape and size rolled through the streets.

Riders are to assemble at Tregurra Park and Ride Car Park in Truro at 8.30am for a 10.30am start.

Organiser David Saunby caught up with the Packet ahead of the event.

He said: "We're hoping this year that the police will be riding with us just to keep an eye on things – the riders who don't keep in the sport of the occasion."

David is keen to stress that, as stated in the promotional poster, the event is "a memorial run and not a race".

This comes after several riders were airlifted to hospital after a crash during last year's ride.

He said: "We're hoping for an accident-free run. Over the 32 years I think our record has been very good."

David, who is also a Cornwall Councillor representing Falmouth's Trescobeas ward, spoke about he and his friend Martin Jennings "spent some great times on the Isle of Man on holiday".

Speaking about how the event has grown massively since the first ride in which 130 people showed up, David said: "I think he would have appreciated it."

This year's event is in aid of two lifesaving charities: Cornwall Blood Bikes and Cornwall Air Ambulance.
