The scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz famously lacked a brain, but there was plenty of thought-power needed when Mullion held its annual Scarecrow Festival over the bank holiday.
It was up to visitors to decide who each scarecrow on a trail around the village was depicting - be it a real person or a fictional character.
This year's theme was “Land, or Sea, or Air”, leading to creations such as David Attenborough through to Amelia Earhart - and even a giant Shaun the Sheep made out of straw.
Now in its 13th year, the event had strong support from residents and businesses, with 45 of them making a scarecrow to display outside their properties.
Judges Edwin Carter and his wife chose “Climate Protestor” as the best scarecrow, with the Polurrian Hotel’s “Kraken” in second place and “The Ancient Mariner” third.
Highly commended were “Sir Walter Raleigh”, “Captain Birdseye” and “Phileas Fogg” - the latter of which was also named the People’s Favourite.
Trail winners, who correctly identified the most scarecrows, were Ella Peake from Newbury, the Grimmer family, and Ian and Jill Harvey.
The festivities began with a parade of people dressed up as scarecrows making its way around the village to Mullion Methodist Church, where the trail started.
Lunches and teas were served in the schoolroom throughout the weekend, where there was also competitions, stalls, and games.
In total £3,346 was raised for the ongoing maintenance of the Methodist church as a centre for worship and the community.
Pauline Rowse, from the church, said: "Grateful thanks to all who helped and supported a really successful weekend."
