Cornwall College has appointed a new leader.

Former Ofsted inspector John Evans has been appointed as principal and chief executive of The Cornwall College Group which has campuses in Truro, Falmouth and several other towns around the county.

Mr Evans, who has more than 30 years' experience in further education colleges in the South West, will take over full-time from interim principal and chief executive Dr Elaine McMahon in the Autumn term.

Dr Ian Tunbridge, chair of TCCG's board, said the college was thrilled to appoint Mr Evans.

He said: "John’s obvious passion and enthusiasm for delivering innovative teaching and learning, and ensuring that all learners have an outstanding experience resonated with everyone.

"In the meantime, we are fortunate that Dr Elaine McMahon will continue as Interim Principal and Chief Executive, ensuring the sustainable long term future of our colleges for the benefit of our communities and the region.”

John has held the post of principal of Yeovil College since January 2014 following a role as vice principal for curriculum and quality of Swindon College.

He also worked at Bridgwater and South Devon Colleges, as head of motor vehicle, construction & engineering and head of technology respectively.

John took on the additional role as an Ofsted inspector across the country in 2011.

Born in Bridgwater, he has lived most of his life in Somerset and has close connections to the region.

Dr McMahon, who also has more than 30 years’ experience in further and higher education, joined TCCG in November 2018.

“I am passionate about the ability of FE to have a positive socio-economic impact and to widen participation through partnership working, which is why I am so happy this vital college has appointed John,” she said.

“His experience and expertise, particularly in terms of quality and student experience, will help TCCG secure a bright future for its learners and the businesses it supports through training and apprenticeships.”

Dr McMahon, who was made a CBE in 2009 for services to local and national education will step down from her post in the Autumn Term to make way for Mr Evans.
