IT has been confirmed that the surfing arm of Boardmasters is still going ahead, with action at Fistral Beach starting today and running through the weekend.

The festival site at Watergate Bay is closed however, with camping also not an option for those who have travelled down to Newquay.

Would-be festival-goers not wishing to stay in Newquay can make a swift return home, however.

Great Western Railway tweeted to say: "In response to the cancellation of the #Boardmasters music festival, those with return tickets from #Newquay between now and Monday can use their returns today from 09:30."

This afternoon, it added that all unused tickets would be refunded.

It said: "Unused train tickets to and from Newquay for Boardmasters can be refunded at your point of purchase, including normally non-refundable Advance fares."

So what exactly caused the organisers to cancel the festival?

Let's take a look at the Met Office's weather forecast for Newquay:

After a pleasant day today and a bright start tomorrow morning, the problems begin thereafter.

A deep area of low pressure is arriving on Thursday afternoon and heavy rain will move in with increasingly strong winds during the evening.

On Friday there is a yellow weather warning issued for rain throughout the day, accompanied by winds which will touch gale force in exposed areas.

The strong winds continue on Saturday, with a further prospect of showers, although less frequent than Friday.

The BBC weather forecast has thunder mixed in with the rain on Thursday evening and Friday, with gusts in excess of 50mph on Friday.
