This year’s Poppy Appeal is sending out a huge thank you to the people of Cornwall as the campaign total reaches a staggering £670,000 - and is still rising.

Annie Binding, county fundraiser for the Royal British Legion (RBL) and who leads the appeal in Cornwall said: "How remarkable are the people of this county when it comes to supporting the Poppy Appeal?

"I am always surprised at how well we, as a charity are supported here in the county and am at a loss as to how to say thank you to this proud and generous community. "With last year's total reaching £570,000 the leap of another £100k this year is phenomenal, and will go such a long way to help with the work we do and the continued commitment we have to our armed forces community."

Many people may not be aware that the legion's support of military personnel and their dependants begins after only seven days of service, continuing throughout their life, long after service is over.

Steve Lewis, RBL county chairman, said: "What a great achievement to raise those kinds of funds here in Cornwall. Many thanks, not only those people who donate hard earned cash to the Appeal, but also to the hundreds of volunteers who give time and effort so freely. Altruism at its very best!

"Alongside those individuals we owe a huge debt to the many corporate businesses that support us by allowing us to collect on their premises – always with good grace and respect to our army of fundraisers."

He added: "Last year we supported 187,328 inquiries through our helpline. People approach us for many different reasons. They often need advice and support related to housing, homelessness or living independently.

"They can experience employment issues or face financial difficulties, debt or benefit problems. They may also face mental and physical health difficulties or need care in later life. The legion will always be there for those people in their hour of need. That is how the public’s donation is spent."

The next Poppy Appeal will begin on the Saturday, October 26 and the appeal is starting its search for volunteers for the next appeal. It may be delivering poppy boxes in their area and collecting them back in at the end of the appeal.

It could be a couple of hours at a supermarket collection; making up poppy trays; stock refills, etc. There will always be a job to do and anyone with time to spare in October and November will be welcomed with open arms. They do not have to be members of the legion nor do they need to belong to a legion branch, or to have served in the Armed Forces.

Annie added: "We presently have no poppy appeal organiser in Falmouth and I would love to hear from anyone or any organisation who would consider taking on the role to ensure we have Poppies in the town this year."
