A DYNAMIC exhibition highlighting the unpredictable and challenging nature of working in the studio, opens at The Crypt Gallery, St Ives on August 18.

Taking part in Wild and Unruly are four visual artists who met when they occupied neighbouring studios in Towednack, near St Ives.

As well as showing work in a variety of media, Graham Pullen, Susi Gutiérrez, Gary Rogers and Ant Viney will be demonstrating some of their working methods – with the aim of demystifying the creative process to the public.

And in the spirit of making art more open and accessible, each day one of the artists will give away a piece of work to a visitor chosen at random.

Explaining the group’s choice of name, painter Ant Viney said: “Good art is never safe art. And while I – like many artists - may not look like a wild and unruly person, below the calm surface that most people see, there lurks a large degree of creative chaos, which is essential for producing authentic work.”

The name Wild and Unruly also references all four artists’ strong engagement with nature, which visitors to the exhibition can see expressed in abstract silkscreen prints about sea and shoreline discoveries (Graham Pullen), paintings and prints based on inner and outer landscapes (Susi Gutiérrez), recycled pots and mosaic animal sculptures (Gary Rogers) and paintings evoking the transience and impermanence of the natural world (Ant Viney).

The show is open daily from Sunday 18th to Friday 30th, from 11am to 5pm at The Crypt Gallery, Norway Square.
