FIREFIGHTERS have been battling a grain dryer fire for several hours this morning.

The 30-tonne machine, designed to prevent grain being spoiled during storage, is in Perranwell Station.

Fire crews from Falmouth and Truro, an aerial ladder platform from Truro and a wholetime officer were mobilised to the incident just before 8am.

On arrival, crews discovered the dryer on fire and proceeded to fight the blaze using two breathing apparatus, two main jets, one hose reel jet, one triple extension ladder and a thermal imaging camera.

Just after 8.30am, an additional pumping appliance from Truro was mobilised upon request from the crews on scene.

Firefighters formulated a plan to remove the corn from the dryer and a welfare vehicle from St Dennis has also been sent to the incident.

Just before 9.3am, an additional pumping appliance from St Austell, a water carrier from Helston, an incident command unit from St Just and a second wholetime officer were sent to the scene.

UPDATE at 3pm: Crews, alongside the farmer and specialist equipment have removed all grain from the silo. The silo has now been deemed safe.
