AN IMPASSIONED warning has been issed to dog walkers in Penryn.

Two friend's dogs were endangered yesterday when they took a dip in Argal Reservoir, which contains deadly blue-green algae.

Tara Buttle and Fern Norman took Boo and Oscar to the beauty spot, only to be horrified after learning of the dangers.

Tara's facebook message reads: "Do not let your dogs in or near the water at Argal Reservoir, Penryn. It’s filled with toxic algae, which is fatal if ingested.

"Boo and Oscar went in there today as soon as we became aware, we rushed them to the vets."

The women had not seen the South West Water sign warning of the algae, but thankfully another dog walker told them about the potentially disastrous consequences.

Tara, from Truro, added: "Thankfully, we washed as much off as quickly as possible and took them straight to the vets for treatment.

"Although, it’s currently looking like we had a very lucky escape, we aren’t out of the woods yet, so please keep your fingers crossed for us."

She describes South West Water as "extremely irresponsible" as there was only one small sign, which they missed because it was set away from the water.

She added: "But it DOESN’T say how severe it could be. Certainly, it doesn’t say that contact with water can lead to fatalities. I just want everyone else to be aware.

Referring to Boo and Oscar's recovery, Tara said: "They are having some medication every four hours and a cone of shame to stop them grooming themselves."

The Blue Cross For Pets website states:

Blue-green algae can be toxic to dogs. Call your vet immediately if you suspect poisoning.

Don’t let your dog drink from or swim in water containing blue-green algae

Blue-green algae is most common during the hotter, drier summer months when there is less rain
