There were many more walkers than usual in Mawnan Smith on Sunday, when Mawnan WI opened a dozen gardens belonging to members and friends to raise funds for Children’s Hospice South West.

From mid-morning tickets were on sale in The Square and more than 350 trail maps were handed out.

Sally Annan, Mawnan WI president, said: "We are thrilled to have raised over £2,800 for CHSW. Having visited Little Harbour earlier this month, we wanted to support this inspirational local charity.

"The event attracted some new members and we hope to welcome them, and anyone who is interested in joining us, to our next monthly meeting which will be held on Thursday, September 12 at 7.15pm in Mawnan Memorial Hall."

Families and groups of friends admired the hard work of the owners and many found their way around all of them, before having a homemade Cornish cream tea in one of the gardens with views stretching to the Helford River.

A wide range of plants was also on sale and archive material featuring Mawnan WI was on display including the first register from back in 1920.
