THE head teacher of a Sedgemoor boys' school, who was suspended pending a child safety investigation, has now retired.

Malcolm Lloyd has stepped down from his post at Brymore School of Rural Technology after seven years.

The Mercury has reported how Mr Lloyd was suspended in May by Somerset County Council and Brymore School governors, following a meeting which reviewed concerns about the school’s safety procedures.

That followed the arrest of two teachers in connection with alleged sexual and firearms offences.

In a letter to parents, Brymore chair of governors Barbara Drakeford said the suspension had since been lifted, and Mr Lloyd had retired voluntarily.

In a statement on behalf of the school governors, Somerset County Council said they respected Mr Lloyd's decision, and acknowledged “the impact of his leadership on numerous aspects of school life.”

However, the county council has not made public the results of the safety investigation, which was launched at Brymore earlier this year by the Local Safeguarding Children's Board, and which has now been completed.

Former governor Paul Bateman, whose son has just finished his education at Brymore, told the Mercury the full report should be made public.

* ELAINE Faull, the head teacher at Court Fields Community School in Wellington, who has been interim head at Brymore since Mr Lloyd's suspension, will continue as acting executive head for one day a week, while Mark Thomas, deputy head at Court Fields, has been asked to take over as full-time acting head at Brymore.
