DAY services at Halcon House, Taunton, have been temporarily moved - due to structural problems with the care centre's roof.

But users claim they have not been told about changes, and that Somerset County Council is trying to get rid of them so it can close the building completely.

George Evans, who regularly uses the centre after two strokes, said: "They haven't told us anything about moving services -- we just keep hearing about certain facilities being moved.

"They have also told several of us we no longer need to use the service, despite the fact we still feel it's a benefit to us. We just feel there's more going on than we are being told."

The council said it had to move the services for the safety of users.

A spokesman said: "The temporary relocation of services based at Halcon House is due to structural problems in the roof.

"To ensure the safety of users of Halcon House, the council's property services team have been monitoring the listed building's condition for some time.

"It is now evident that in the short term, social care services cannot continue to be provided from this building for safety reasons."

But the council also admitted it is moving services away from day centres.

Justin Robinson, the council's portfolio holder for adult primary care, said: "The council can assure Taunton residents that adults with physical disabilities, who have assessed needs, will continue to receive day services at different locations.

"For the past four years we have been preparing to move away from centre-based services to mainstream services that are more inclusive and offer more choice.

"For example, we have been piloting the use of Taunton Library as a base for day activities over the past month.

"This is proving successful and will be one of the bases we will use regularly in Taunton."
