AMBITIOUS plans have been unveiled to transform a historic Taunton pub into a restaurant with offices above.A plush new building will also go up in Corporation Street beside the former Four Alls pub (more recently The George) with flats over offices and shops.
Taunton-based A&H Gadd Ltd was finally granted planning permission for the development following a long wrangle with Taunton Deane Council.
Planners turned down previous applications as being unsuitable for a conservation area. Gadd's planning director, Steve Major, said:"This is such an important site in terms of being the gateway into the Cultural Quarter, as envisioned by the Vision for Taunton regeneration plans.
"The development which has been approved keeps the Four Alls building unchanged externally, as recommended by Terrence O'Rourke Consultants, with a sympathetic contemporary building alongside it."
The new development will see a restaurant in the former bar areas of the Four Alls, with offices on the first floor. The new building will offer more office space and shops on the ground floor, with 14 twobedroom apartments above.
Work is due to start early next year with completion in 2007.
