A young man from Truro was killed on Friday night in a tragic road accident at Carnon Cross.

Jonathan Allam, 22, was walking towards Truro along the A39, after a night out with friends, when he was hit by a car.

He was rushed to the Royal Cornwall Hospital by ambulance, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The female driver of the car, a red Honda Accord, was also taken to hospital, having suffered injuries to her wrist.

Jonathan's family this week expressed their great sense of grief and loss at the tragedy. His father, John, a retired accident investigator and photographer with Cornwall Fire Brigade, described him as a "sensitive and affectionate" person, who adored animals and loved people.

But he said Jonathan, who attended Archbishop Benson and Penair schools, also suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which left him dependent on medication.

It also meant that he was strongly influenced by alcohol, and even a small quantity could have a significant effect on him.

Mr Allam said: "He has been tormented terribly. My only consolation is that now he no longer has to take the pills he hated, he no longer has to suffer."

Jonathan's mother, Patricia, said he worked for a time as a porter at the Alverton Manor Hotel and in the post room of the Royal Cornwall Hospital, but was unable to hold down a long-term job.

She added: "He had unconditional love for everybody. He never talked badly about anybody. People who knew him knew he was a lovely boy. He was wonderfully affectionate."

Jonathan's sisters, Lindsay and Debbie, this week helped to comfort their parents at the family home on Rosewin Row, Truro.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned, and the funeral is expected to take place on Friday.

It is believed that Jonathan was returning to Truro after an evening out with friends in Redruth, and got out of the car and started walking shortly before they stopped in Trispen to drop off some equipment.

Police set up local diversions on the road while a full investigation was carried out at the scene.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to the accident to come forward. Anyone who was on the A39 at around midnight on Friday is asked to contact MPC Nick Etchells on 08705 777444.
