ONE of Wellington's ugliest eyesores could be torn down if plans by Somerfield supermarket are approved.
The former Wellington Discount Stores buildings, on the High Street, are part of a planning application submitted by Somerfield Stores this week, in which they will be demolished, along with the Kwik Save store, to make way for a much larger supermarket.
The buildings have been a bone of contention in Wellington since the Discount Stores closed seven years ago. Traders and shoppers felt their dilapidated state made a shabby entrance to the town.
The plans will see all three buildings fronting the High Street demolished, and the creation of a 2,187 square-metre supermarket set back from the road with parking for 143 cars. A two-storey retail/office building will also be created on part of the Discount Stores site.
