FEARS about the safety of the road between Chelston roundabout and the M5 have been denied by Somerset County Highways who say there have only been two minor accidents there in the last three years.

Liberal Democrat spokesman Jeremy Browne said the road design increases the risk of a head-on collision because of the old-fashioned shared middle lane for overtaking and is calling for the road markings to be changed.

Mr Browne said: "The stretch of road between the Chelston roundabout and Junction 26 of the M5 is a serious accident hazard.

"The shared middle-lane for overtaking massively increases the risk of head-on collisions, which often prove to be fatal."
