A HOST of weird and wonderful money-spinning activities took place in and around Helston for the annual Children in Need fundraising extravaganza on Friday.

Some creative outfits were on display at Helston Community College, where a fancy dress competition organised by students in the childcare department helped boost funds, as did a non-uniform day and the sale of cakes and other goodies.

There was plenty of screaming coming from the health and beauty department at the college, where a sponsored waxing session was held to raise money for CLIC and Children in Need.

Several game members of staff took up the challenge, including college head Nigel East and teacher Dave McDonald, and plenty of students also volunteered to lose their hairs for the cause.

Among those grinning and bearing the pain were Matt Swiggs, who said he would never repeat the process, "even if you paid me", and fellow student Joshua Beirne, who said it felt "like being stung by a swarm of bees".

The college, with plenty more money still to come in, has already raised well over £1,000.

Elsewhere, staff and youngsters at Godolphin primary school supported the appeal by dressing up in a variety of costumes and holding a special fruit day.

Even the smallest children from the Little Dolphins pre-school at Godolphin did their bit for the cause.

The Rodney Inn in Helston held a Children in Need auction on Friday night, raising in excess of £800.

At RNAS Culdrose, members of the Royal Navy Motorcycle Club carried out a sponsored run up and down the main runway.

Almost 40 bikers gathered at first light - when the runway was not being used by aircraft - to take part in what has become almost an annual event.

Other fundraising activities included the traditional Big Breakfast served up at the Culdrose Community Centre in Hibernia Road, which raised more than £200 for the cause.
