TRURO CITY 0 ST AUSTELL 2

TRURO City's unbeaten home record was left in tatters on Saturday after St Austell picked up all three points from their Carlsberg SWL victory at Treyew Road.

City played quite well in the first half, but their finishing failed to match their approach work.

St Austell on the other hand did not bother with such restrictive practices as fine, flowing football and made use of the direct route which paid handsome dividends with a goal in each half.

City began brightly with Steven Hawke almost putting his side ahead with a 30-yard lob. Penhaligon won the ball in a challenge with Luke Wort, but the clearance only went as far as Hawke whose lob back towards the goal landed on the roof of the net.

It took the Lillywhites just eight minutes to edge in front when Tom Saundercombe hooked the ball home following a goalmouth scramble.

Undeterred, City hit back with some useful moves, but a combination of excellent goalkeeping by Gary Penhaligon, weak finishing, and a final ball that was all-too-often poorly delivered, did not do City any favours.

Richard Young had a good opportunity, but shot tamely when well placed and Kayne Trevaskis saw a chance develop, but the angle was tight and he eventually scuffed his shot.

St Austell looked a very effective, tight unit, but three minutes before the break they missed a golden opportunity to increase their lead when Andy Butcher conceded a penalty after making a rash challenge on Lee Whetters.
