I SHOULD like to mention my concern about the future of tourism in Cornwall. I am a true Cornishman through and through and I travel right across the Midlands and beyond meeting people of all walks of life through what I do.

People on hearing me speak at once recognise me as being Cornish. They talk of their holidays when they were young, how their parents spent holidays in Cornwall before them with their parents, as later they did with their children. But now so many say the same thing, Cornwall is losing its appeal, its uniqueness is disappearing and they will never return.

What made Cornwall so unique? As a seafaring nation, our good old boys brought back many ideas from across the globe to make Cornwall stand apart and become the envy of others. That's what people came to see.

I suspect that the reason for this vandalism, and that is what it is of the very character of Cornwall, is caused by people from the cities like London and such like. They have done it in my part of the Midlands. They want the address to say Cornwall, but the facilities to appear more like London.

To see vandalism at its worst visit Redruth Fore Street, the character has gone, there are weeds and grass growing between the paving blocks, shops, like the fruiters, just down from the town clock, when asked by me for some medlars looked at me - I will be kind and say with a look of puzzlement.
