CHARITY shops in Chard are being targeted by thieves stealing donated property from doorways.
Bags full of clothes, toys and books are being ripped apart by looters who take what they want and scatter the rest.
Spokespersons for Help the Aged, in Fore Street, and St Margaret's Somerset Hospice, in Holyrood Street, told the News the problem was long-standing but getting worse.
Although difficult to prosecute, taking from doorways is still theft.
A police spoksman said: "It is an offence. It is theft by finding. Our advice would be to take stuff in during opening hours if you are thinking of donating."
