THREE sites near Taunton were secretly considered as places to dump radioactive waste in the 1980s, newly released documents have revealed.

The sites at the Norton Manor Camp, Langport and Merrifield were short-listed by former Government agency Nirex as possible locations to dispose of intermediate level radioactive waste.

The company was set up to manage the waste burial programme, but it was abandoned in 1997.

The list of more than 500 sites was re-vealed last Friday under the Freedom of Information Act.

All three sites were ruled out in the first stage of the programme because they were deemed unsuitable.
