PORTHLEVEN Town Band gained second place at the famous West of England Bandsmen's Festival at Bugle.
Playing in the fourth section, the band improved on last year's third place position with their performance of the test piece, "Stantonbury Festival."
Record entries at the contest meant stiff competition for the young band, but adjudicator, William Relton, said he was impressed with the "excellent dynamics" and "steady tempo" displayed on the day.
Not only was the band able to celebrate their success at winning second place but first trombone player, Amy Shannon, gained the Jack Hooper Memorial Trophy for best musician in the fourth section.
Amy, aged 13, from Porthleven, has been playing the trombone since she was nine and is a successful product of the band's training scheme.
Winning the accolade, Amy said: "I'm really pleased. I can't believe I've won this over so many people older than me and have been playing for years."
With the festival over, the band continues the season by playing various concerts around the county. They play outside the Harbour Inn, Porthleven every Sunday evening from 7.30pm .
The training band meets on a Sunday morning at 10am at the new band room in Porthleven shipyard where young and old are welcome.
