CONCERNS have been expressed over a proposed large industrial development in Helston.

An application has been received for an office building and workshop, to be placed near the Bosnoweth roundabout, off Clodgey Lane, as the first phase of a long-awaited business park.

The plans also include access roads, a turbine and eight ponds, for drainage purposes.

Assurances were given that the ponds would be properly fenced around, but members of Helston town council planning committee were still uneasy.

Town mayor Paul Phillips said: "When we spoke to the architect he said, 'I can quiet understand your concern, but they are going to be fenced off'.

"Otherwise, they would be deep enough for a child playing around to be a goner. But that's going to look awful in my opinion."

Councillor Niall Devenish said he had come across a similar scheme further up the country, but in that case there had been just one large lake.

"It's become a nature walk, because it has its own wildlife now. A lot of these developments are trying to encompass that.

"But there does seem to be quite a lot of small ponds, rather than a large, attractive, big one," he said.
