THE Speech and Language Therapy service for adults at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro is looking for volunteers who have an hour to spare on a regular basis.
The department is about to start a pilot programme in which volunteers are trained in how best to hold a conversation with someone who has communication problems following a stroke.
People who are unable to communicate easily, often miss out on the stimulation and fun of having a "good chat" because their ways of communicating have changed. With training, volunteers can visit people at home to help fill this gap and decrease some of the isolation often felt when speaking is difficult.
The volunteers can be from any background but should be at least 16 years old. They will receive training, a resource pack, ongoing support and the opportunity to make a difference.
