TONBRIDGE and Malling Motorcycle Club and Track Racing Promotions held their first International Floodlit Super Cup at Yalding near Maidstone, Kent, at the weekend.

Five 1000cc sidecar crews from Cornwall, Myles Simmons/Kevin Woodley (Redruth); Richard Thomas/ Jason Barry (Helston); Matt Tyrrell/ Shaun Yates (Bugle); Andy Symons/ Nicky Owen (St Austell) and Wayne Westaway/Mark Courtney (St Austell) all made the long journey,

The weather was perfect for the occasion, with sunshine and a cool breeze blowing just enough to keep all the riders cool.

Thomas/Barry and Tyrrell/Yates both started well with second placing in their respective heats, on a well watered slippery track, Simmons/ Woodley and Westaway/ Courtney were fourth and Symons/ Owen sixth.

The track conditions changed with the late evening sunshine and breeze helping to continually dry out the track and the floodlights being switched on early for everyone to become accustomed to them.

In the second set of heats conditions had improved dramatically, and Simmons/Woodley improved their result with a second placing, Tyrrell/Yates a third, Westaway/ Courtney a fourth, Thomas/Barry a fifth, and Symons/Owen a sixth.

The third set of heats saw Simmons and Woodley speed away from the gate to lead from start to finish, with Westaway/Courtney only managing a sixth. Matt Tyrrell, Richard Thomas and Andy Symons all met in the next set of heats, with Thomas/Barry being involved in first bend bunching. Tyrrell/Yates took the lead, to win that heat, and Symons/Owen taking third place and Thomas/Barry finishing in fifth.

The fourth set of heats saw a dramatic change in the conditions with the sunlight dimming and the floodlights caming into play. Thomas/ Barry and Simmons/Woodley had the best results with fourth places, Tyrrell/Yates and Symons/Owen fifth places and Westaway/Courtney pulling out with machinery trouble.
