A CALL for a public meeting to discuss Chard's Guildhall project has been dropped.

At Monday night's meeting of Chard Town Council, Cllr Phil Fitzgerald asked a series of questions about the handling of the project, saying he reserved the right to propose a public meeting on the issue.

The questions were answered as well as possible by Chard Mayor Tony Prior, who had trawled through minutes and reports in advance of the meeting.

He said the overall cost of the Guildhall was about £2.3million, paid for by grants of about £1.7million, with the remainder picked up by the town council.

In resisting the call for a public debate, he was joined by many councillors around the table, who agreed with him that the matter was now water under the bridge.
