A DRIVER will face court after they were caught speeding at 76mph on the Toneway in Taunton – a road with a 40mph speed limit.

The red Seat was spotted exceeding the speed limit this morning (Tuesday, January 3).

The car was seized by police officers after they discovered it had not been taxed since July.

An Avon and Somerset Police roads policing unit spokesperson said: “The driver of this car was stopped this morning having been seen doing 76mph in a 40mph limit on the Toneway, Taunton.

“Further checks also found they have not taxed it since July! Vehicle seized and court summons pending for the driver!”

Police and Somerset County Council are warning drivers of the Fatal Five driving behaviours that are the main causes of injuries and deaths on the road.

The five factors are speeding, careless driving, not wearing seatbelts, using a mobile phone and drink or drug-driving.

Cllr Mike Rigby, the council's executive lead member for transport and digital, said: “The fatal five have been proven to be the root causes for most casualties on the roads.

“The road safety team are doing some brilliant work around raising awareness of these factors, and everyone should take notice of them and make sure they are both fit to drive, and then behaving correctly when they’re at the wheel.”
