MORE than 350,000 cases of Coronavirus (Covid-19) have been confirmed so far in the UK, according to government figures.

Number 10 figures also show that more than 40,000 people have lost their lives to the virus.

The figures only cover people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19, however.

Other measures suggest the number of deaths is considerably higher.

The Government announced 2,948 new cases on Monday, only marginally down on the 2,988 total announced on Sunday, which was the highest figure since May 22.

The numbers for daily confirmed cases began to rise again in July - after falling significantly from their April peak - as lockdown restrictions imposed in March were eased.

Official numbers for cases during the peak underestimated the true level of UK infection at the time, as widespread testing was not as available until mid-May.
