Proposals for a community remembrance garden have been given the go-ahead.

Carlisle City Council has given permission for the garden in the disused grounds of Knowe Church, Bewcastle, near the Scottish border.

The application had been submitted in April, the decision was made on Friday.

Chairman of Bewcastle Parish Council, Margaret Smith had previously said: “It is a remembrance garden for those killed in the first and second World Wars.

“We are going to make it the starting point for a memorial walk, which we did when it was the 100th anniversary of World War One."

Included in the plans is a proposal to build an information board that will show the walk's route for visitors to follow.
