FIREFIGHTERS were called to a gas cylinder fire in Penryn yesterday evening (Saturday).

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service was called to Helland Gardens in Penryn on Saturday evening.

Twelve firefighters on three appliances from Falmouth and Tolvaddon were sent to the scene.

On arrival, they found that a 6kg propane cylinder was well alight.

Firefighters used one hose reel jet, two breathing apparatus and a safety jet to put out the fire, which was on a balcony.

They also used a thermal imaging camera to monitor the cylinder's temperature.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Twelve firefighters on three appliances from Falmouth and Tolvaddon attended a call to a propane gas cylinder on fire on a property's balcony, the fire was under the eves of the building.

"Fire crews confirmed on their arrival that the 6kg propane cylinder was well alight on their arrival. Firefighters used one hose reel jet, two breathing apparatus and a safety jet on the fire. Neighbours to the property were advised to stay in their properties.

"Firefighters also used a thermal imaging camera to monitor the cylinders temperature at the incident.

"At 19:55 the cylinder was confirmed as no longer venting and was placed in an over drum of water to cool the cylinder and prevent any reignition."
