STUDENTS from Bridgwater's 999 Academy have taken on a tough fundraising challenge to help raise money for the NHS Charities Together fund.

The pupils, who aspire to be frontline heroes in the emergency services, have decided collaboratively to walk, run or cycle 10km for every frontline worker who has died of Covid-19 during the pandemic.

This means they will be walking a total of 1,440km by the end of July, and are already well on their way to their target.

Ten days into the challenge and the 999 Academy students have already completed 973km, but ay even if they reach 1440km early, they will carry on until the end of July to show their appreciation.

One of the students, Yasmine Newton-Mason said: "The aim is to raise awareness of just how amazing our front line workers are and the importance of their jobs.

"Any money we raise will go to NHS Charities Together which puts funding towards battling Covid-19 and to help protect workers in the front line such as NHS staff, emergency services and military personnel."

So far the team has raised £255.
