A YELLOW weather warning is in place for Cornwall on Thursday night as thunderstorms are forecast.

However, the Met Office says that "many places will be dry or see little rain", but adds that, where they do hit, "thunderstorms may cause flooding and disruption in a few places".

It added: "Thunderstorms may develop across parts of western UK late on Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

"A larger area of thunderstorms is then expected to move northeastwards overnight into Friday.

"Many places will miss the worst of the storms but where they do occur torrential downpours could bring 30-40 mm rain in less than two hours. Lightning and hail are also likely to be additional hazards."

The warning is currently in place from 4pm on Thursday until 9am on Friday.

However, the forecast for Falmouth predicts a roughly 20 per cent chance of thunderstorms and rain between 6pm and midnight.

Truro is set to miss the worst, with little rain forecast, and Redruth's forecast shows the possibility of storms from 8pm, as does Helston's.

For those areas that do get hit, the Met Office says that there is "a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds".

It added that, where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures and there is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.

It said there was also a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
