The leader of Cornwall Council has said he “stands with Black Lives Matter” and has thanked people taking part in peaceful demonstrations.

Julian German made the comments in his opening remarks at the first Cabinet meeting to be held since lockdown on Wednesday.

Since the last meeting there have been a number of events in Cornwall organised by Black Lives Matter supporters calling for equal rights for all.

Cllr German said: “I stand by Black Lives Matter, I recognise that racism is happening in Cornwall and this is not acceptable.

“Cornwall Council will continue our work alongside partners to eradicate racism.

“Thank you to everyone in Cornwall who has spoken of their experiences. Thank you to those who have demonstrated.

“Black Lives Matter and equality for all of our residents is one of the reasons I want to move positively forward for all of Cornwall.”

Demonstrations have been held in Cornwall, including one on Monday in Truro which saw more than 1,000 people gathering in support of Black Lives Matter.

The event was marred by a confrontation between some of the Black Lives Matter demonstrators and people who had gathered at the war memorial in Truro who said they were protecting it from being damaged.

Police had to keep the two groups apart and there were several arrests as a result.

Black Lives Matter organisers have said they had no intention of damaging the war memorial.

The Black Lives Matter movement has gathered momentum worldwide following the death of George Floyd in the USA after he had his neck knelt on by a police officer as he was arrested.
