WEATHER warnings have been issued as three days of thunderstorms are set to hit the South West.

Three different Met Office warnings cover Somerset across three days.

The first warning, for thunderstorms, covers much of the west of the country, as well as Wales. It lasts from 1.30pm today (June 16) until 6am tomorrow.

Then another warning takes over from noon until 9pm tomorrow.

On Thursday, a yellow warning for rain is in place from noon until 9pm.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms will break out across many parts of the UK on Tuesday afternoon. Some places will miss them, but where they do occur they will bring torrential downpours with 25 to 35 mm rain falling in an hour and perhaps 40 to 50 mm in 2 to 3 hours in one or two places.

"Lightning and hail will be additional hazards. These showers and thunderstorms will only slowly die out through the evening, but may persist across northwest England, southwest Scotland and perhaps eastern Northern Ireland into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

"Heavy showers and thunderstorms may develop across southern England on Thursday. These could be slow-moving, giving some locally torrential downpours.

"In some places 20 to 30 mm of rain could fall in an hour with the potential for 40 to 50 mm in 2 or 3 hours in a few spots. Lightning could be an additional hazard."
