Homes across the Helston area are finding water from the tap is "like milk".

Problems began yesterday evening and there is still some evidence of discolouration today, with taps running cloudy.

One person wrote on Facebook last night: "What the heck is up with the water, it’s coming out like milk?

"I have ran the tap for 15 minutes and still the same."

There have been reports from Helston, Trewennack, Gweek and St Keverne, with the issue appearing widespread.

A spokesperson for South West Water told the Packet that there was a burst water main in the Redruth Road on Friday morning, which was fixed within a short space of time.

She said: "Customers in the area may find that their water is aerated, which will give it that milky appearance.

"It will return with normal use."

She said anyone running water in a glass will see it clear upwards and it is perfectly safe to drink, as it is simply air in the water.

Running the tap will make no difference to clear it.

More information on the South West Water website states that water may appear cloudy or white if air has become trapped in the pipes, usually when repair work has been carried out.

"The air dissolves in the water when it’s under pressure but, once you turn your tap on and the pressure is released, tiny air bubbles are formed.

"This gives the water its white or cloudy appearance.

"We call this aeration."

It added that customers don't usually need to do anything and the cloudiness will disappear in time, as the air is released.

The South West Water website also shows a separate issue just outside of Helston, which was first reported at 6.35pm yesterday.

A map on its website pinpoints problems in both Sithney and Godolphin Cross.

The company said: "We are making arrangements, including traffic control, to repair this leak."
