A LARGE group of travellers moved on to St Matthews Field in Bridgwater last night (Wednesday, June 3).

The field where Bridgwater Fair takes place currently has more than a dozen vehcicles including several caravans set up on the site.

Travellers have stopped at the site numerous times in recent years, and have once again gained access, despite Sedgemoor District Council increasing security measures there.

Last year, in a bid to deter unwelcome visitors following concerns from councillros, local residents and allotment tenants, a heavy duty “kick rail” was installed along St Matthews Field Road, together with a two metre high height restricting barrier at the Albert Street entrance.

In order to increase security the Durleigh boundary, much larger boulders were put along the boundary.

A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council said: "The Council is aware of the unauthorised entry and encampment on St Matthew’s Field (The Fairfield) in Bridgwater. 

"The travellers arrived during the evening of Wednesday, June 3.  The police attended. 

"Legal staff will be attending the site today with the police and will be following the set legal procedures that we have to follow."
