Police have closed off an area of Penryn town centre over a suspected bomb threat.

The bomb disposal team is currently in New Street, where a 20 metre cordon has been put up.

Police have said they are "treating the discovery as arson with intent to endanger life."

A spokesperson said: "Police were called at around 11.10am this morning, with reports that there was a suspicious incendiary device at the back door of the Masonic Lodge.

"A 20-metre cordon was put in place and a team from the Royal Navy Explosive Ordinance Control attended while door to door enquiries were carried out.

"Police are treating the discovery as arson with intent to endanger life."

Update 5.30pm: Police have confirmed that the Explosive Ordinance Control team has "made the device safe" but there are no further updates at this time. 

The incident is still described as ongoing.
