FIREFIGHTERS worked quickly to prevent a blaze in a DIY roofing yard spreading to nearby gas cylinders.

Crews from Wincanton and Castle Cary were called to an industrial unit in Wincanton at around 6.30pm last night (May 25) after reports of black smoke and fire being seen.

On arrival, the crew reported the fire was well alight and set about tackling it.

"They quickly requested a further fire appliance which was sent from Gillingham and the aerial ladder platform from Yeovil as it was confirmed there were gas cylinders involved in and within close proximity to the fire," a spokesperson for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

"The Environment agency and Wessex Water were both informed of this incident due to the large amounts of water being used from nearby hydrants and the potential impact to the environment from water run off."

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, the spokesperson added.
