Twenty residents evacuated from Minehead care home after fire

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to Martlet Road in Minehead after fire control received a call reporting a fire alarm sounding at a home in Minehead.

A fire crew from Minehead was sent to the scene.

When the crew arrived they requested for a second fire engine to attend as it was confirmed there was a fire at the property.

Two more fire engines from Minehead and Porlock along with an aerial appliance from Bridgwater and an officer were sent to the scene. 

At 6.53pm it was reported from scene that firefighters were treating this incident as a persons reported incident so a further appliance from Williton was sent to the scene. 

An ambulance was requested by the fire service to treat two people with smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "The three storey care home of standard construction had a fire involving the sluice machine in the first floor sluice room.

"Fire crews used six breathing apparatus sets, one attack jet, one safety jet and two thermal imaging cameras.

"20 residents were evacuated by fire personnel and care staff and a further 13 residents remained in situ at safety within the home.

"The sluice was 50 per cent destroyed by fire, the room of origin was 100 per cent damaged by heavy smoke and the first floor had minor smoke damage."
