A HILARIOUS headteacher has proved he is a man of his word after setting his pupils a challenge which would result in him performing an emotional Disney song on video and uploading it online.

Olly Priestley, of St John's Church of England Primary School, set the children the challenge of submitting 50 pieces of artwork during the time the schools are closed as the country battles the coronavirus outbreak.

The children rose to the challenge, which meant the dedicated school leader had to put on his dress and wig to give his best impression of the song 'Let It Go' from the hit Disney film Frozen.

“A challenge is a challenge,” he said

“I’m not a singer - you can tell that from the video - but it was my way of thanking the children for all the hard work they have done.

“The response from our parents has been amazing.

"But the children deserve it. These are difficult times and anything we can do to bring a smile has to be worth it.”

DRAMATIC: The headteacher committed to the bit, despite not always hitting the high notes

The school has been using technology innovatively to stay in touch with its pupils.

Teaching assistant Alan Mitchell even ran a virtual disco, setting up as ‘DJ Mitchell’ from his garage and then children all joined in through the web Ap Zoom.

The school sets homework regularly on the school website and the staff post video stories which they have recorded themselves.

Teachers also phone all students during the week to make sure they are well.

And the school kitchen is working hard providing daily packed lunches to families entitled to income-based free school meals, which are delivered to their homes.

The headteacher finishes the musical video with a message to the families.

He said: "We've got two weeks of Easter break now where the staff aren't going to be setting any work for you, but please keep busy and find ways to entertain yourselves.

"We will be in touch still, there will be phone calls and visits for some families, and we will be checking in to see if you guys are alright.

"Please email if there are any problems whatsoever.

"Be healthy, be safe, be kind to one another, and please - be at home.

"Happy Easter."
