A NEW South-West survey reveals a massive surge in community activity across the region to meet the challenge of climate change.

The survey, conducted by Friends of the Earth with funding from the South West Regional Assembly, shows that there are well over 260 community groups in the region who are tackling climate change and an astonishing 103 groups have formed since 2005.

These groups involve over 25,000 people, who give their time and effort almost entirely voluntarily. While some of these are branches of national organisations, more are independent groups.

Founder of thr Milverton Climate Challenge said: "We hope that other communities in the South-West are inspired to tackle climate change head on. Having completed a carbon survey of our village we in Milverton are now looking at ways of helping the village save energy and have set up two working groups to look at renewable energy and energy saving measures. We have also arranged the sale of low energy lightbulbs for 60p each at our village post office."
