FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a flat fire in Taunton this morning (Thursday, February 6).

Crews arrived at The Court on Victoria Street in Taunton at 7.30am, where a fire had broken out in a ground floor flat.

Residents of the building were told to evacuate the building while the firefighters dealt with the fire.

There was smoke in the stairway as the residents made their way out of the premises.

After around 10 minutes the matter was under control and the residents were allowed back into their homes.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Upon arrival, crews confirmed one ground floor flat was heavily smoke logged and one casualty was led to safety and given oxygen.

"An ambulance was requested for the male who was believed to have suffered smoke inhalation."

The fire was successfully extinguished and crews used positive pressure ventilation to clear smoke from the building.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental.
