A TRIBUTE has been paid to a "loving grandad" who died in a collision in Winchester.

Robert George Soper, of Bereweeke Road, died following a crash between himself, a Peugeot 807 and Land Rover Discovery on January 10.

Mr Soper was walking along Andover Road North when the incident occurred shortly before 8am.

Emergency services were called but the 81-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following his death his family has paid tribute to him

They said: “Known to everyone as Bob, he was happily married to his wife Diane for 58 years. Bob was father to David and Richard, and father in law to Mark and Georgie. He was the loving grandad of Matthew and Emily.

“Recently settled in Winchester, Bob spent most of his life living in and working around Itchen Abbas. He was a quiet, contented man with a warm heart that was full of mischief. He is much missed by his family and friends.”

Enquiries into the exact circumstances of the collision are ongoing and officers investigating are still keen to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident and has not already contacted us.

Yesterday an inquest was opened into the death Mr Soper's death. 

Senior coroner Christopher Wilkinson opened and adjourned the inquest to July 1.

A cause of death has been given by pathologist Dr Adnan Al-Badri as multiple injuries.

During the incident a dog, Una, also died which was understood to have been being walked by Mr Soper.
