A NETFLIX show has been praised by Avon and Somerset Police for the way it raises awareness of an important subject.

In a Facebook post, the force highlights the storyline in the recently-aired season two of the hit show Sex Education.

One of the show's characters goes through a situation involving a sexual assault, and reports it to the police.

The force is encouraging anyone who can relate to character Aimee's story to come forward and report it, too.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Are you watching Sex Education on Netflix?

"Aimee and Maeve are our heroes in Season Two for tackling an issue very close to our hearts... Sexual assault.

"If you can relate to Aimee's story, don't stay silent, report it. It's never a waste of our time and we will always take it seriously."

One person wrote: "I thought the storyline was great and highlighted just how the report should be handled. I liked how the police took it seriously and made the girl feel heard."

To which the force replied: "Thanks, the things you've mentioned are exactly what we loved about the episode."

Sex Education season two is streaming on Netflix now.
