THERE'S a chance to see behind the scenes and check out some of the county's history when the Somerset Heritage Centre holds two open days this month.

The centre, at Brunel Way, Norton Fitzwarren, will showcase documents in the collections featuring the tradition of Guy Fawkes carnivals as part of the Explore Your Archive initiative on Monday, November 18, from 10am to 12.30pm.

There will also be guidance on using the resources of Somerset Archives and Local Studies, a talk on archive sources, an exhibition, a store of the strongrooms and details of the online catalogue.

A special behind-the-scenes guided tour of the heritage centre on Tuesday, November 26, will allow people to learn about the centre's records of Somerset dating from the Eighth Century to the present day, with a chance to vie the strongrooms and stores.

Esther Hoyle, archives engagement manager, said: "We are delighted to participate in the Explore Your Archives national campaign once again.

"The campaign provides exciting opportunities to access rarely seen pieces of Somerset’s remarkable heritage.

"We look forward to welcoming visitors to these special occasions."

The events are free, but booking is essential via somersetarchives@swheritage.org.uk or 01823-278805.
