A PRE-school was evacuated during a fire.

Staff led children from the Watery Lane Pre-School premises based at St Michael's School, Minehead, after smoke was seen billowing from a shed at the premises yesterday afternoon (Monday). No-one was hurt during the incident.

The pre-school has been temporarily closed as it is currently without electricity.

Three fire crews and an aerial platform ladder were sent to the incident.

A spokesman for Minehead Fire Station said: "On arrival crews found that the school had been promptly evacuated and confirmed smoke issuing with electrical arcing taking place in a brick built outbuilding.

"Crews confirmed a fire involving a mains incoming cable, fuses and switchgear.

"All the children and staff were soon safe and occupied in other areas of the school to keep them safe and warm on a wet afternoon."

Western Power staff attended to make the area safe and return power to neighbouring properties.

A social media post from the pre-school said the fire had been in a small brick shed away from the classrooms.

It added: "Everyone was safe...the pre-school children were amazing and enjoyed seeing the firefighters.

"A big well done to the staff as well who evacuated our building in record time and their calm reactions meant the children took it all in their stride. All our practice fire drills paid off."

While the electricity remains out, the pre-school sessions are taking place in the nearby Baptist Church.

Staff hope the electricity will be back on tomorrow (Wednesday).
