THE M5 has been fully closed in both directions this morning after a crash in Somerset.

All three lanes of the northbound and southbound carriageways were closed between Burnham-on-Sea junction 22 and Bridgwater North 23 after the incident which took place around 5.20am (October 2).

As of 7am, lanes one and two in both directions have been reopened.

The crash involved two vehicles, with one person being trapped inside.

Emergency services were at the scene and a diversion was put in place.

Firefighters from Bridgwater, Burnham and Taunton rushed to the scene after reports a person was trapped in the vehicle which had overturned.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Two Fire Engines from Bridgwater, two from Burnham on Sea and a Heavy Rescue Tender from Taunton were all sent to a report of an RTC that had gone across both carriageways.

"On arrival crews confirmed that this RTC was involving two vehicles and had initially crashed on the southbound carriageway. One vehicle in the southbound carriageway had no persons trapped, however the vehicle that had overturned onto the northbound carriageway had one person removed by Ambulance personnel and one person still trapped inside.

"Crews assisted the ambulance crew in getting the second casualty onto a spinal board, before making the vehicles safe. The incident was left in the hands of the police."

A spokesperson for Highways England said this morning: "The M5 in Somerset is currently closed in both directions between J22 and J23 due to a multiple vehicle crash which has resulted a vehicle overturning coming to rest on the opposite carriageway.

"The response to this incident is being led by Avon and Somerset Police and Highways England has resources deployed to assist with traffic management.

"At this time there is no estimate for reopening.

"Diversions are along the adjacent A38 in both directions.

"The northbound diversion is signed by the solid circle diversion symbol and the southbound is signed by the solid diamond.

"If travelling towards this area from much farther afield, delay information will remain visible on our on-road variable message signs until delays have cleared."

Buses of Somerset says some services will be impacted by the closure.

A spokesperson said: "The M5 is currently closed both ways between J22 Burnham and J23 Bridgwater North.

"This is due to a multi vehicle accident.

"The A38 Between Bridgwater and Burnham is already heavily congested.

"This will impact our 21 service. Disruption expected until 10am."
