ONE of the highlights of Taunton's summer has left a lasting memory for thousands of people.

Families, groups and individuals joined in with the fun of Taunton Toad Trail, which has now come to an end.

The 22 fibreglass amphibians have gone into hibernation ahead of being auctioned off next month.

The models were sited at locations in and around the county town for a total of two months.

People were able to buy trail maps to track down the various toads following the launch of the initiative in the Orchard Shopping Centre in July.

The toads were sponsored by local companies - some of the firms paid extra so they can keep theirs, while others are being auctioned to the highest bidders when they go under the hammer at Hestercombe on Sunday, October 13, from 3pm. They will be displayed at Hestercombe during the preceding week.

Peter Renshaw, chairman of the Taunton Toad Trail committee, said: "Many people have commented on how much they have enjoyed doing the trail, which also brought visitors to Taunton.

"Many people, particularly young children followed the trail over the summer."

Profits from the project will go to the League of Friends at Musgrove Park Hospital.

The league, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, has pledged to raise £300,000 towards the refurbishment of the Bracken Ward Birthing Centre at the hospital, including a new birthing pool.

Anyone wishing to donate to the appeal should send donations to The Treasurer, The League of Friends, Church Barns, Hockworthy, Wellington TA21 0NW, with cheques payable to League of Friends Musgrove Park Hospital. Alternatively you can donate online using the reference BRACKEN to sort code 30-98-45 account number 00890237.

The toad trail follows the Taunton Deane Dragon Trail of five years ago, when thousands of pounds were raised for a number of community projects in the area.
