PARENTS will unite to protest over poor air quality in Taunton.

A peaceful demonstration is planned by the Mothers Rise Up group - supported in the county town by Taunton Green Parents and Parents For Future.

Protestors will gather in East Reach - 'one of the most polluted roads in the town' - to highlight the need for urgent action to tackle climate change by taking part in a banner relay spreading across the country.

"They will hold up a huge banner emblazoned with the words ‘For the Love of Our Children Act Now’," said a spokesperson.

"The banner is being passed from one group of parents to the next as part of a nationwide protest that will zig-zag across the country over the summer."

The relay, which kicked off in London on Sunday 7 July, will take in 11 cities and towns from Bristol and Birmingham to Sheffield and Cardiff and in addition visit Scotland and Northern Ireland over an 11-week period - symbolising the 11 years climate scientists say we have left to prevent catastrophic climate breakdown.

Hundreds take part in Mothers Rise Up march in Taunton

It will culminate with a mothers protest in London as part of a week of global climate action in September.

The protest comes after a Mothers Rise Up march in Taunton in May, which saw hundreds of people take to the streets.

Mothers Rise Up is calling on MPs to up the pressure for deeper and more rapid emissions reductions through measures such as a ban on dirty energy including fracking and a massive expansion in renewable energy.
