A COMMUNITY came together this weekend to get people out of their houses and talking as a neighbourhood about safety.

Tonge Fold Neighbourhood Watch is leading the charge in bringing the area together and making people of all ages feel safe in their homes.

The group held a hugely popular family fun day on Saturday in Tonge Park which saw "thousands" come out to enjoy the 28 stalls run by local business, a barbecue, face painting, sports and other activities.

Dave Edmonson, 41, is the chair of the community group and has lived in the Tonge Fold area all his life.

He said: "We're all volunteers, we do it because we love the area and want to give something back and help.

"We wanted to bring back a sense of ownership to the area and the community support we had on Saturday was amazing.

"We tried to do everything free as much as possible. The queue for the barbecue didn't go down for about three hours.

"A few thousand people came out over the course of the four hours. People loved it and are asking us to do it next year."
